India win seven medals in Plezn Grand Prix Shooting

                                      heena-sidhu1Heena Sidhu claimed a bronze medal in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol event on the final day of the Grand Prix of Liberation Plezn Shooting Championships in the Czech Republic. India had a haul of one gold, two silver and four bronze medals from the event.

                                     Heena shot 218.8 in the eight-woman final, won by Greek shooter Anna Korakaki, who had won gold in the 25m Pistol and bronze in the 10m Air Pistol events at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics last year. Anna shot 246.3 to finish ahead of Germany’s rising star, 21-year old Michelle Skeries, who took silver with a score of 237.8.

                                    India’s Shri Nivetha Paramanantham also qualified for the women’s 10m Air Pistol final, in which she shot 198.7 to finish fourth behind Heena. Shri Nivetha had qualified for the final in the third position while Heena had qualified in the fifth position.

                                    Indian shooters made it to four more finals. Pooja Ghatkar finished fourth in the women’s 10m Air Rifle, Gurpreet Singh ended sixth in the men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol, while Chain Singh finished seventh in the men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions final.

                                     tejaswani-samantLondon Olympics bronze medallist Gagan Narang competed for the first time for his shooting academy, Gun for Glory, as the event allowed private participation at own cost. Narang finished fourth in the men’s 50m Rifle Prone event, while Sushil Ghaley, representing India, finished fifth.

                                    There were also impressive performances by the Indian men’s 25m Standard Pistol team, which swept the medals in the event, with Neeraj Kumar winning gold, Harpreet Singh silver and Deepak Sharma bronze. Veteran shooter Tejaswini Sawant won a silver in the 50m Rifle Prone event while Pemba Tamang won bronze in the men’s 25m Centre Fire Pistol. Anmol Jain had won a bronze in the men’s 10m Air Pistol event on the first day of the event. (Agencies)
