Welcome Bronze for Spikers

Though it is a bronze medal but it means a lot for Indian Spikers who have finished third in the recently concluded Asia Cup Volleyball competition at Uruomieh in Iran. It is a welcome return to podium for after 24 years in any Asian level competition. India last time won a bronze medal in 1986 at Seoul Asian Games.

The Asia Cup was held at Ghadir Arena, Uruomieh in Iran from August 1 to 7, 2010 and top eight teams were invited to play. India was not first selected for the competition but when Indonesia withdrew, India was given a chance.

India was placed in group A along with China, host Iran and Chinese Taipei while the other group comprised Australia, Japan, Kazakhstan and South Korea. With 1-2 win-loss record, India finished third in the group and qualified for the clash in knock-out stage with South Korea, who finished second in group B.

India played extremely well against strong South Korean outfit and notched up a hard-fought 25-23, 12-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-11 win to storm into the semifinal. India again played well but host and eventual winner Iran was too strong to be dispatched off. In a thrilling encounter India lost 19-25, 25-22, 25-20, 17-25, 11-15.

For the bronze medal play off, India defeated Chinese Taipei 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 27-25.

Defending champion Iran retained the title defeating China in straight sets. Sanjay Kumar of India was declared the best scorer of the championship.
