Holding a Football World Cup, first came into discussion at the
Federation of International Football Association’s (FIFA) Congress,
held at Antwerp in 1920. Eight years later in 1928 Congress, Jules
Rimet, President of French Football Association, again moved the
idea of holding the World Cup and FIFA passed a resolution to go
ahead. Jules Rimet who was also elected President of FIFA during the
same Congress, prepared roadmap and did all the groundwork to take
his idea into reality. The trophy was rightly named after him -
Jules Rimet Cup.
In 1930 first Football World Cup came into being. Olympic champion
Uruguay was given the honour to stage this prestigious event.
Uruguayans joy was double as they were also celebrating the 100th
anniversary of their independence in that year. 13 teams took part
in the first World Cup competition and host Uruguay went on to claim
first title, defeating Argentina in the final.

After the successful start, there was no looking back. With every
outing, the number of participating countries has grown considerably
and at present more than 160 countries are clashing to find a berth
in the World Cup’s main draw.
Brazil won the Jules Rimet trophy outright in 1970. A new trophy,
FIFA World Cup came into being thereafter. It is a solid gold 36cm
high cup, designed by an Italian.
