Inept Surrender by Dhoni's Men

           Ashish Nehra

After a fantastic victory over Sri Lanka in the third and final test, Dhoni's men made a mockery of themselves in the inaugural match of the Triangular Series, being played in Sri Lanka. They were not only beaten all ends up by the enthusiastic Kiwis team at Dambula but also crushed to 4th heaviest defeat in the annals of Indian ODIs.

On winning the toss, new Kiwi skipper Ross Taylor elected to bat but his decision seemed to be wrong one when Kiwis batsmen found it tough to cope with Indian  pacemen - Praveen Kumar and Ashish Nehra's controlled swing bowling in initial overs. At one stage, the visitors were struggling at 28 for 3 but then captain Taylor and Styris took control of the situation and carried their team out of danger with resolute batting. Both added 190 runs for the 4th wicket, a new record for New Zealand against India for any wicket. Taylor made 95 runs before being out leg before wicket off Nehra. Styris also missed the hundred and fell at 89 which comprised 9 fours and 1 six.

After Taylor and Styris' departure no other Kiwi batsman could stay at the crease for some time and the whole Kiwis team was bundled out at 288 in 48.5 overs. In recent times, the total around this figure has not been safe one and India too have chased this total on number of occasions.

But Kiwis total proved a hilarious task for Indian batsmen. They were never seen comfortable at the crease, finding rhythm and applying themselves to the cause of team's as well as nation's prestige. Their attitude and mind-set was simply astonishing. After getting comparatively good start of 29 runs from the openers - Sehwag and Karthik, the whole team was sent back only in 29.3 overs for a paltry total of 88 runs, which is the lowest ever total against New Zealand. What is a shameful surrender - by a team which is number one team in Test Cricket and dreaming for winning the 2011 World Cup.

Suffering defeat is a no matter but the way India lost the match, is a huge concerned for the million of followers of this lovely game. India may bounce back as she has the capability, but World Cup will still be a distant dream.
