        To recognise the contribution and achievements of a sportsman, The Union Government  offer two awards every year - Civilian and National Sports awards. The Civilian awards are Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri and these awards are generally announced on the Republic Day. The Bharat Ratna is the highest Civilian Award and no sportsman till date has been decorated with this honour. The National Sports Awards include Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award and Arjuna Award. Dronacharya Award is presented to the coaches for excellence in sports coaching. These awards are generally presented on the National Sports Day. 

 
   

 

         Besides these awards, State Governments, Sports Federations, Institutions and many other organisations have instituted their own awards to honour sportsmen of the country. Some Indian sportsmen have also been conferred honour for their stupendous performance by other nations. The Helms Trophy, ICC awards, Wisden awards and Chess Oscar are some world wide respected sporting honours which are bestowed on the Indian Sports persons. Some other Indian sports personalities are also honoured with Olympic Orders.
